Most students are aware that in the “working world” making a professional impression matters in almost every field—whether it is in academia or industry; however, many students do not have the “how to's” or the resources to develop their professional presence. Collaborating with an enthusiastic planning committee (comprised of students, postdocs, alumni, and several student affairs offices), the Caltech Career Development Center, Caltech Alumni Association, JC Penney, Sephora, and Avon fashioned a program that will address this need.

My father always told me, “The way you present yourself and first appear is as important as what you present”.... From my own experiences, it seems to be very true.

For Caltech students, a resume may seem more important than what shoes you're wearing or whether you've had a haircut recently. But in reality it may be a combination of appearance, personality, and the resume that will take the cake. This will hopefully help Caltech students get as much respect for their personal appearance as they get for their resumes. |

Recently I saw someone wear a white t-shirt to an interview here at Caltech. His attire did not bode well with his interviewer. Additionally, I've seen presenters wear a nice buttoned up shirt with a white undershirt peeking at least 2 inches below the bottom of the buttoned top! I think the Caltech community should learn how clothing can be used as a tool for success. |

I think professional presence is important because it is your first impression with a potential employer or client. You want your first introduction to start off with a bang and then blow their minds at how intelligent and impressive you are. Outer appearance is not all that matters, but a polished professional image sets the stage for a successful interview. |
